Each of these advanced programs will be offer as eight one-hour collaborative classes over a 4-month semester. Learners must take the Core Program before entering one of these tracks.

Managing an Advocacy Group

A patient advocacy group will only succeed if its internal structure and leadership is intact. This course will instruct patient advocates on the best practices to be effective leaders, managers, and communicators.

Changing Policy

This course will instruct patient advocates on how the Canadian health care system works and best practices to work with regulatory agencies to change policies that are more in line with your patients’ needs.

Supporting Research

The goal of many patient advocacy groups is find a treatment or better treatment for their patients. That requires an investment into medical research. This course will instruct patient advocates on the best practices to fund, recruit, and work with researchers and companies.

Core Curriculum

Introduction to Patient Advocacy in Canada

This course will introduce students to the core concepts and skills needed to be a professional patient advocate in Canada.

Advanced Curriculum

These courses will provide students with advanced concepts and skills to be professional patient advocate in Canada. The three different themes will focus on three common themes that patient advocacy leaders in Canada generally concentrate on:

  1. management/leadership
  2. changing policy, and
  3. advancing research.
