Core Curriculum
Introduction to Patient Advocacy
Eight one-hour collaborative classes over a 4 month semester. Classes will focus on the following topics.

What is Patient Advocacy?
This course will introduce students to the important role that patient advocacy provides to society. The course will also discuss the different types of advocacy groups (fundraising, awareness raising, research, policy, etc) and advocacy jobs.

Introduction to the North American Health Care system
This course will educate students about the different entities in the Canadian health care system (Health Canada, CADTH, PMPRB, Provincial Ministries, pCPA, INESSS, etc) and how they interact with patient advocacy groups. To come, education modules in the American health care system.

Treatment Options

Starting a Patient Advocacy Group
This course will focus on the different regulatory requirements involved in starting advocacy groups (charity, non-profit, CRA, 501(c)(3), state laws, provincial laws, board members, etc). The course will also provide a list of pros and cons of starting a new organization.

Review and Final Exam
After completing the core curriculum, specialize in one or more of the advanced areas.
Core Curriculum
This course will introduce students to the core concepts and skills needed to be a professional patient advocate in North America.
Advanced Curriculum
These courses will provide students with advanced concepts and skills to be professional patient advocate. The three different themes will focus on three common themes that patient advocacy leaders in North America generally concentrate on:
- management/leadership
- changing policy, and
- advancing research.
